WESLEY CHAPEL – The Zephyrhills Lady Bulldogs (10-9) eliminated the Fivay Falcons (12-12) Tuesday night from the girls FHSAA 6A, District 8 tournament.
It was a night for the freshman as the Falcons Kearston Brewer led the scoring for Fivay with 10 points and Maya Llanes top the charts for Zephyrhills with 13. The only other player in double figures was Fivay’s sophomore Marielis Creque who also had 10 points.
The Bulldogs took the lead from the opening tip-off and never trailed scoring 24 points in the first half to the Falcons 13. Llanes scored 9 of her 13 points in the first half.
The Falcons, who had just three seniors this year, will have to wait until next season, although the future looks bright with four freshman and four sophomores on this year’s squad.
The Bulldogs will now have to face the number one seed and hosts, Wesley Chapel in the semi-final match Wednesday night at 7:30 pm. The Wildcats (20-2) won the two regular season meetings between the teams and will enter the game as the favorites.
In the other quarter-final the Gulf Buccaneers (16-11) defeated the Pasco Pirates 52-41 to earn a trip to the semis to face co-favorite River Ridge (22-4) Wednesday at 6:00 pm to determine the final matchup that will be played Friday at 7:00 pm.
