LAND O’ LAKES – The Land O’ Lakes Gators (11-2) maintained their hold on top of the 7A, District 8 standings Tuesday night by topping the Springstead Eagles 58-49.
Springstead (6-6) broke out on top in the opening quarter and still maintained a lead of 16-14 at the end of the first eight minutes. The Eagles remained even with Land O’ Lakes through the first half and went into the locker room down just 2 points, 27-25 at the break.
At the opening of the second half Springstead came out cold from the floor and the Gators regained their rebounding talents to hold the Eagles to just 6 points in the third to take a double-digit lead 41-31.
Mekhi Perry registered a double-double for Land O’ Lakes, scoring 15 points and bringing down 12 rebounds in the contest. A junior, Chase Farmer was the other Gator in double figures in points with 14 for the night.
Springsteads double-digit scorers were sophomore Unique Torain with 15 and senior Sincere Torain with 10. David Battle was the top rebounder for Springstead with 11.
The Eagles will stay on the road to take on District rival Sunlake (8-7) Friday night and Land O’ Lakes will travel to River Ridge (1-10) to challenge the 6A Royal Knights on Wednesday.
