WESLEY CHAPEL – Last week it was cheers, this week tears, as the Palm Harbor University Hurricanes defeated the Wiregrass Ranch Bulls 2-0 to eliminate them from the 2019 FHSSA playoff race.
Just a week ago the Lady Bulls gave the Hurricanes their only loss of the season with a 1-0 shutout of their own to win the 5A, District 7 title. This week however, in the re-match, the defensive minded Bulls could not stop the Palm Harbor attack and allowed the two goals that ended their season.
In the eighth-minute of a first half, that was predominantly controlled by the Hurricanes, Alivia Gonzalez, a University of Florida commit, took a pass from sophomore Camryn Boyette to score the games’ opening goal. That score changed the complexion of the game and put Wiregrass Ranch on their heels and in catch-up mode.
In the 31st minute Lauren Kane started and ended a goal-scoring play for PHU that effectively ended the game for the Bulls. After a steal by Kane to start a break with Gonzalez, who drew in two defenders she sent a cross to senior Mary Raymond, Raymond passed it back to Kane beating Makenzie Spurling for her second goal of the season.
Palm Harbors’ keeper Cameron Laine was tested only twice by the Bulls, while Spurling faced a total of nine shots including the two scores.
