WESLEY CHAPEL– The Wesley Chapel Wildcats became FHSAA 3A, District 7 champs Thursday night by defeating the Nature Coast Sharks 2-1 in a defensive district final battle.

The Wildcats opened the scoring six minutes into the contest when Maddi Golka broke free on the right side to beat Sharks keeper Talia Nowlan for the games’ opening score. The goal was Golka’s 5th of the season.

After the goal the game became a defensive battle that took place between the 18-yard boxes, Neither team could muster another shot on goal but at 34 minutes a Wildcat error near their own net resulted in a Sharks attack that nearly tied the game, but the ball went harmlessly over the goal and the half ended in a 1-0 Wesley chapel advantage.

In the second half the Sharks would not be denied. At the 13-minute mark of the second half, sophomore forward Mia DeRonda received a pass from Marina Augugliaro and sprinted down the right side and scored on Wildcats keeper Madison Holcombe for her 30th goal of the season to tie the game at 1-all.

With 12 minutes remaining senior Madison Olsen broke the deadlock for Wesley Chapel with a goal that was just her 3rd of the season, but it was the game winner that gave the Wildcats the title and Home field advantage in the Regional tournament that begins February 5th.
