WESLEY CHAPEL – The number two Wesley Chapel Wildcats (17-8) were paired with the number seven seed Pasco Pirates (2-12) for the opening round of the FHSAA 6A, District 8 tournament Tuesday night. And came away with a 65-33 victory to advance to the semi-final round that will be held at Anclote high school.

The Pirates were stymied by a much faster Wildcat defense right from the start being out scored 20-4 in the opening eight minutes. The Wildcats were led by Donte Sol with 20, Isiah Ramsey with 12 and Sam Lowe with 10 points on the night.

Wesley Chapels’ quickness in the transition game was displayed by the speedy Sol who was fed six times for breakaways, accounting for 12 of his 20 points. On defense, 6’-4” junior Ethan Jones stone-walled Pasco with blocked shots and rebounds in the first half. Jones defensive play was highlighted by a stellar block from behind of a Pirate layup by a sprinting Jaques Mobley. Jovanny Bates and Jacques Mobley were the only two Pasco shooters to find the net in the opening period. Freshman center, Matthew Webster was the only Pirate in double figures for the game with 16 points.

With the loss the Pirates are eliminated from the District tournament. The Wildcats will return to action at Anclote Wednesday to face the Zephyrhills Bulldogs (15-8) in the semi-final round while the Anclote Sharks (18-5) take on the Gulf Buccaneers (17-10) in the other semifinal match.

The winners of those contests advance to the final with the district title game scheduled for Friday February 15th at 7 pm. Both participants in the final advance to the Regional tournament with the District champion earning home court advantage.
