WESLEY CHAPEL – The battle for district 8 girls basketball heated up Thursday as the Wesley Chapel Wildcats defense shut down the River Ridge Royal Knights in the den 31-19 to pull even in the standings. Both teams have an 11-1 record in district play with the one loss coming against each other this season.
The Wildcats “D” did not allow a single point in the first half of play and kept the Knights to single figures in the third to lead 21-7 after 3 quarters.
The Royal Knights Brandi Willard, who averages 17.9 points per game was held to just 6 by virtue of two 3-pointers in the final quarter. Katrina Vega with 6 points in the 3rd and Caileigh Sheldon with 4 in the 4th were the only other Knights with field goals in the game.
Wesley Chapel Coach Peter Livingston said “It was a big game for us tonight and we had a pretty good Defense… The girls were ready to play”
Wildcats Captain Ariana Heppenstall was the only player on the court in double figures with 10 points. Ameria Christopher and Kayla Grant with 6, Shawnti Vance with 5 and Heaven Williams with 4 were the other scorers for the Wildcats.
