ZEPHYRHILLS – The Zephyrhills Christian Academy Warriors topped the Bishop’s HS Knights of LaJolla (San Diego) California 23-7 Friday night.
When asked what brought the Knights all the way to Florida for Friday’s contest Allen said they looked ahead in the schedule to fill a bye week. Since it fell so late in the season everybody in the area was already committed so we started the search in the west for strong competition and ended up here in Florida.
On the Knights first play from scrimmage Antonio Spencer picked off a Knight’s pass and returned it 35 yards for the Warriors. The Warriors first play, a lateral pass from quarterback Caleb Gasken to Javion Hanner who tossed an apparent touchdown to Kavbion Marbra was called back. The toss to Hanner was determined to be forward.
The drive ended with a 38-yard field goal for a ZCA 3-0 advantage with 8:32 remaining in the opening period.
Clarence Freeman IV picked off a Gaskin toss near the end of the first quarter at the Knights 11-yard line. Bishop’s drive made it as far as the Warriors 18 to open the second period where they turned it over on downs to ZCA.
On the ensuing drive, the Warriors coughed up the ball deep in Knights territory. The fumble was scooped up by Gabe Thomas who returned the miscue 65-yards for a Bishop’s score and a 7-3 lead with 7:46 remaining in the half.
With just 57 seconds remaining in the half Nyjohn Moody scampered up the middle to the Bishop’s 9-yard line. Jalen Spencer sealed the deal with on the next play to give the Warriors a 10-7 halftime advantage.
After deferring the opening kickoff, the Warriors were given a short field on the second half opening drive when an attempted on-sides kick failed to travel the required 10 yards. Starting at mid-field. Hanner capped off the ZCA drive with a rushing touchdown to give the Warriors a 17-7 advantage.
Hanner was not done. The next Warriors drive ended with a 60-yard scamper for another ZCA score. The attempted 2-point conversion failed resulting in a 23-7 Warriors lead that would turn out to be the final score of the game.
Hanner (166 and two touchdowns), T.J Scott (95), and Moody provided the lion’s share of the offence for ZCA totaling 344 yards combined for the contest. Jalen Spencer also added a TD for ZCA.
Defensively, The Warriors had 4 interceptions led by Kavbion Marbra with 2. Marbra now has 7 on the season.
With the win, and a win next Thursday against Admiral Farragut, The Warriors can earn a bye in the first round of the FHSAA 2A Region 2 playoffs that begin November 9th.
